FASHION FILES: Class Is In Session

By: Tymeco Pyles

CFDA nominated brand, Public School NYC has turned it up a notch with their unique designs and ever so classic identity. Public School designers Dao-Yi Chow andMaxwell Osbourne founded the label in 2008 and they live by one mission, to find perfection in imperfection. Public School is one of the up and coming conspirators in the new wave of young irreverent American menswear designers. They take inspiration and energy from their surroundings and inject that attitude into their garments. They understand that fashion should help change or augment the way you feel. They want men to feel tough again.

In a constant reaction against the expected, Public School holds a pen in one hand and a sword in the other. They are both teachers and students who continue to critique the culture we help create, resulting in a new vision of constructed garments that focus on fabrication, fit and attitude. The COOLest thing about Public School NYC is the operation. All items are manufactured out of New York, in factories based in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. This is just another principal that sets them aside from the rest.

FASHION FILES : KENZO NEW ERA CAPS

You know we love a good collabo and this one ranks in our top five in the past year. Parisian brand KENZO has teamed up with New Era to create one of the most sought after fashion accessories today. We've been geeking out them and have scoured the fashion planet for these hot accessories. So far we've found a few at Opening Ceremony. You can also purchase the Spring 2013 collection on the KENZO site, but sizes are limited, but we prefer the Fall 2012 collection with the large embroidered logo on the front of the hat. The Spring collection is too timid with the logo. The color combinations were also a lot cooler in the fall collection. Either way, they're hot & the accessible $60 price tag is so worth it.
These are a COOL must have for the sunny days ahead.

BRAND BUZZ : The New American Is Arriving!

In our last post, our new contributor Tymeco, asked the very important question,"When can a brand rebrand?" In this post we'll see a big brand that did.

By: Tymeco Pyles
(our COOL new contributor!)

The airline that America has grown to know and love is undergoing a DRASTIC, INNOVATIVE, and BOLD change with their fresh approach on the flying experience. American Airlines has joined forces with US Airways, using the tagline “Two airlines coming together to make something better.” This massive move has sparked the rebranding of a small piece of history, since American Airlines has been around for nearly 80 years. Are you ready for the bright, new, modern American Airlines?

The redesigned American Airlines logo represents a number of things that are important to the company. They call it The evolution of an icon. According to their new website introducing the recent identity update, the fresh look symbolizes their passion for progress by incorporating the colors and symbols you've come to associate with American.
Reflecting the soaring spirit that is uniquely American, the new logo — the Flight Symbol — contains the eagle, the star, the "A," and refreshed shades of red, white and blue. Together, they represent a clean and modern update to the core icons of the company.

With such a dynamic change, there is bound to be some mixed reviews on the pioneering design. I stumbled upon an article in USA Today entitled: American Airlines’ New Look:
Thumbs up or Down? The logistics of the article basically boiled down to this:

THE GOOD
1.    While it may not be as classic as the old one, it does bring some elements of the old into the new. If you look closely at the new logo, you can see the beak of the old AA eagle.
2.     The design and logo looks terrific. At first glance, the tail looked overwhelming but it's grown on the eyes and now it proudly shouts American.
3.    It was hard to translate American Airlines' efforts to be at the forefront of technology and social media to their ancient, out-of-date branding. The new look will help align their brand identity with their newly-found innovative spirit.

THE BAD
3.    The minimizing of the "American Eagle" is a huge misstep in their brand identity. It has been such an icon for so long to minimize it to the degree that they did shows that they are disregarding those who have been loyal to the brand even through their worst years.

Personally, we think its COOL and change is good. Just please take away baggage fees!

ART SAKE : KING OF POP

This image provided by PepsiCo Inc. shows Pepsi's ‘King of Pop’ can featuring a likeness of Michael Jackson - AP
And so The King of Pop lives on...

In an effort to give brand a little boost, PEPSI is launching a campaign with the One & Only King of Pop. An illustration of Michael Jackson will be featured on special edition Pepsi cans. There will be other aspects of the campaign including: a TV ad in some markets and chances to download remixes of some of Jackson's most famous songs. The irony is that MJ's history with Pepsi is not so great after his hair caught on fire during 1984 TV commercial shoot. Either way, this campaign is COOL and we can't wait to get our hands on one of these cans!

BRANDS THAT INSPIRE : BROOKLYN CIRCUS

Brooklyn Circus is a brand that can be described as neo-victorian, dandy, and retro-urban. Its a mix of old and new, lined with confidence and trimmed with grace. The company was founded by Haitian-American, Ouigi Theodore, whose goal is to "refine the image of urban America."
"BKc has produced garments that bring the past forward into the future while extending an ethos of education, empowerment and authenticity." - Source BKc Website

That definitely gets our stamp of COOL.

Check out some of these videos to hear more about the brand and its founder.

Theodore studied graphic design at FIT and worked as a graphic designer right after he graduated with a history degree. He later scraped together $8,000 and opened his shop. Although he originally helped design the clothes at Brooklyn Circus under the BKC label, Mr. Theodore now farms out the designing, casting himself more as an idea-generator and curator.
