ART BASEL MIAMI BEACH : TUESDAY 12/3 DAY ONE

Our favorite time of year is unarguably Art Basel season right here in Miami. The week is filled with cool events and exhibitions that remind us so much of the time Terrance and I spent courting each other while in art school. We also love all the surprises and randomness we discover throughout the week. 

This year we started out early. On Monday we browsed through opening of the The Wynwood Art Building before heading out to a friend's private "Basel Bash." Tuesday was really the start of exhibition hopping and what we consider 'Day One.' We started at the Context/Art Miami tents in Wynwood and then headed to Project Miami and Red Dot.
We'll be going to back to the Wynwood tents on Friday and Saturday to spend more time browsing and favoring, but here are a few snaps from our drive by.

Not to be missed is Miami Project's pop-up shop that features artist-made merch available during basel only. Prices for the items range from $10-$500. This reminds us of the time when Bansky sold priceless prints on the streets of New York for $60. 

That said, we recommend you stop by and pick something up.

Next stop was the Colette Art Drive By pop-up shop at the Alchemist in the 1111 Lincoln building and the Ferarri Piston Head Exhibition. The Colette shop, on the 7th floor, explored a new shopping experience where users browsed the merch on a wall, ordered at a kiosk and picked up at the check out station. The hottest show in town was the Ferarri event on the top floors. A-listers examined Enzo's and car sculptures while sipping on Veuve in the gorgeous Herzog & Meuron designed building. 

We capped off the evening on sand at Scope Art Fair. The 'drive-by' theme continued as we quickly browsed through amazing galleries, including Ken Borochov's MORDEKAI. We'll be returning to Scope throughout the week to give the show the time it deserves. 
(sigh) So much to do…

ART SAKE : ART BASEL 2012 LMNT

During Basel we hit up the Gentleman Jack event at LMNT which actually turned out to be the most memorable of our Basel experiences. The art was edgy and underground, yet mature and serious; the music was just beyond with a surprise set by Shock G and ScarFace; and the spectators were refreshingly original and stylish. This was definitely the place place to be.  

LMNT is one of Miami's coolest cultural-defining destinations. We call it the heartbeat of the Wynwood Arts District. LMNT is where trend-setting artists of all genres go to work, showcase and thrive.

There's just something so distinctively different about it... no rules and nothing but possibilities.
Equipped with event space, a full production studio, and great gallery space, it's the place where COOL, creative things happen.

ART BASEL : DESIGN DISTRICT LIST

Design District is serving up some major lux fashion with the newest kids on the block this year:

Louis Vuitton, Hermés (yes that's what I said), Prada, Cartier, Céline, Dior and Marni.

Also not to be missed is the famous Haitian Heritage Museum, which always has 

such a great vibe at their events and exhibitions. Another cool favorite of

ours is the Luminaire Lab which features architecture, design, interior decor, and more.

They never disappoint and somehow we always end up being there for their

surprise performance or fashion show.

ART BASEL 2012 - THE305.COM LIST

 

We found one of the best local guides to Art Basel at The305.com. See some highlights and good info below. 

1) Keep checking this list for the latest last minute events.

2) For the actual Art Basel Fair and all the other satellite fairs, you’ll see the complete list towards the end of the guide on The305.com.

3) There are various shuttles going up and down the more higher traffic areas, more specifically and more reliable would be the DWNTWN Miami Art Basel Shuttle that will run from Tuesday Dec 4th thru Sunday Dec 9th. More info, just click here for the map and hours.

4) Our personal opinion, a few of the top things to check out: Art Of Basketball event, Mr. Brainwash’s “NEW” exhibit at his usual spot at the Boulan and at Art Public, Banksy Out Of Context at Art Miami, the Santlov event, Space Invader at Pulse Miami and anything that Primary Projects is doing. 5) The305.com might be sponsoring a daytime block party in Wynwood so stay tuned for those details.

6) LE BARON seems to be the talk of the town when it comes to their series of events. They will hold six super private events at six different locations from Dec 4th thru the 9th. They will release details everyday at 6PM via their Twitter, Facebook and iPhone App, but entrance is not guaranteed. You gotta be on top of it and in the know to guarantee your placement into these events. So download their app “Where is Le Baron?”and check their website, twitter and facebook.

7) For simple and safe good times, definitely hit up all the Midtown Tents: Art Miami, Red Dot, Scope. And try driving a few blocks south to Pulse at Ice Palace Studios as well for a great experience as well.

8) The Standard has some pretty cool events and pop-ups. Stay tuned to their social media for details. Everything they are doing with Terry Richardson should be real dope. A book signing will be held on Friday Dec 7th and a private party afterwards. Also check their Lazy BBQ Sunday Party.

9) The free art cart. Pretty awesome concept birthed from artist Dickson Schneider Kickstarter page. Read up on it. Free art for all!

10) For food, you’re almost on your own if you want to hit up any of the better Miami and Miami Beach restaurants as they are ALL going to be packed. But if you’d like check Eater38′s list of the latest restaurants to try. And then there will be a Food Truck meet-up from Thursday thru Sunday everyday from 11AM – 1AM at 210 NW 22nd in Miami, FL 33127.

11) Individual artists we suggest you check out and support: Miguel Paredes, Kawaii Universe, Jen Starks, Kiki Valdes, and AholSniffsGlue to name a few.

12) And when in doubt, always pass by Wynwood Walls. They are the centerpiece of Wynwood and you’ll always meet interesting people there. And peep the new wall by Shepard Fairey and tributes to Tony Goldman, who passed away earlier this year.
